When I first met Sam, my first reaction was, “What’s with the socks, dude?” (His reaction was “I’m cooler than you expected, yeah?”). As we worked together (on a particularly tough project with particularly difficult dynamics all around), I thought, “not only is this guy wicked smart, he is unflappable and in the midst of it all, there isn’t a backstabbing bone in his body, and he is actually really funny…”. I will remember him most as a good guy who was really smart but someone who didn’t take himself or the work he was doing more seriously than he ought to. Someone who was totally chuffed with his family and the life he had helped build and looking forward to the future with them. I can totally see him do that totally beaker-esque chuffed smirk. We are so sorry for your loss at a stage when in many ways his clarity and quiet strength was needed more than ever. We hold you and your family in the light and offer our shoulders to lean on in any way we can help.
